Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Pelham public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Liquor store zoning location and separation requirements
Pelham wants new liquor stores at least 2,500 feet from each other and 1,000 feet from homes, schools, and churches. One resident warned the spacing rule could pick winners and losers among competing businesses. A final council vote is coming after the ordinance's first reading.
Highway 52 commercial rezone
The council finalized rezoning the corner of Highway 52 and Racquet Club Parkway to general commercial. Leaders stressed this isn't approval of any specific project — a gas station or anything else still needs separate votes, especially on how traffic gets in and out.
Harris Doyle Homes rezoning off State Park Road
A 247-acre tract near Oak Mountain State Park could become roughly 180 homes under PUD-R zoning. Councilmembers worry the lot sizes are too small, worry about what could be built there under existing zoning if the plan is denied, and want better coordination with the school system. A vote could come at the next meeting.
July 9 public hearings: Hwy 52 rezone and CR-11 annexation
Public hearings July 9 at 5:30 p.m.: a rezone from Agriculture to B-2 General Commercial at Hwy 52 and Racquet Club Parkway (proposed QuikTrip) and an annexation at 5025 CR-11 for a home seeking city fire service.
Telecom facility equipment upgrades
Two special use permits were on the agenda to let existing cell facilities upgrade their equipment at 1000 Peavine Falls Road and 2025 Morgan Park Road, following the city consultant's recommendations.
